In early spring of 1940, when NAZIs marched into the city, the population of Paris packed up and fled the city. In the book “Suite Francaise”, the author described how the wealthy lost everything in this period, such as abandoning all wealth when their survival is in peril. In the book, a passage is described as follows:

This passage is obviously for inducing the opposite of empathy; illustrating the secret joy we take in the misfortune of the wealthy. This is based on our nature to easily for social hierarchies, and at the same time we are all concerned about our own wellbeing. Therefore we walk on both of a Social and Selfish “leg”, seeking for a good form of fairness within ourselves in the unfair world.

很明显，这一段话意在激起人们的幸灾乐祸之心，描述了面对富人的灾难的时，人们心里的隐秘的欢愉。之所以会产生这种情感，是因为我们天性易于接受社会等级划分，但是同时又关心自我福祉。因此，我们既有社会的一面，又有自私的一面，想要在不平等的世界中追求一种良好的公平形式。

Yeroen, an alpha male within a chimpanzee population, tries very hard to show his group of his dominance. He would do many things, such as climbing onto a wet branch during a rainy day, beating up the other chimps that got into his way, and do many things in order to amplify his message of strength and stamina. However, things did not intend the way Yeroen expected; most of the chimps watched him as if it were just a show without any reactions. Although a human may consider these actions to be comical, the animals remained indifferent. Yeroen’s action is like the action of many human politicians, the harder they try in their campaign, the more the community will see it’s embarrassing side.

耶罗恩是黑猩猩群里面一只具有大男子主义的雄猩猩。它很尽力的在群里面显示他自己的势。为此，它会在下雨天爬上湿润的树干，将挡他路的猩猩揍一顿，以及做其他一些能够放大它力量和毅力的事情。但是，事情并没有朝着耶罗恩期望的方向发展。大多数的黑猩猩都对他的表现视若罔闻。人类可能会觉得它的行为很滑稽，但是动物们没有任何感觉。耶罗恩的行为就如人类很多政客的行为一样：他们越是努力竞争，居民们越觉得他处于尴尬的境地。
