Good morning, ladies and gentlemen, the topic of my speech today is the ideological difference between Chinese Herbal Medicine and the Western medicine.

我们在这学期进行了中英文化思维方式的比较学习，进一步认识到，东方和西方在文化和思维方式上存在很大的区别。

In this semester, we have received the course on comparative study between Chinese and Western modes of thinking, and have acquired a deeper understanding of their enormous distinctions.

在医学领域，中医和西医之间同样存在着不同。那么，二者的根本区别源于哪里呢?我们认为，是源于思维方式的差异。

Such distinctions also present themselves in the medical field. The question is what the root of such differences is. We believe it is due to the ideological contrast.

大家知道，中医的思维方式是基于直觉，是概括而形成的归纳思维;而西医是基于假设，是证明而形成的推理思维。

It is widely received that the thinking mode of Chinese Herbal Medicine is intuition-based, and was cultivated through inductive generalization, whereas in Western medicine it was derived from hypothesis, thus the western thinking mode is of logical reasoning through test and proving.

深而究之，这两种思维方式的分野又基于两种传统的哲学观念。

If we go a little further, we will see their differences are also associated with their particular philosophical traditions.

我们来看：中医思维方式基于先秦哲学，西医思维方式基于古希腊哲学。二者在本体论(Ontology)上恰恰相反。

We believe the thinking modes of Chinese Herbal Medicine and Western medicine are influenced respectively by the philosophy of Pre-Qin Period and that of Ancient Greece, the ontology of which totally differ from each other.

中国哲学强调“无”，而古希腊哲学强调“有”(Being)。

The Chinese philosophy emphasizes on “non-being” and, in contrast, the Western philosophy promotes the notion of “being”.

那么，由“无”产生的结果是什么呢?古人认为，无生有，道生万物，天人合一，因此强调整体、追求归纳。

Then what was resulted from the Chinese non-being thoughts? Ancient Chinese held the concept that ”The non-being begets the being, Tao begets everything in the world, thus Heaven and Man combine into an integral whole”. From this we can see integrity and induction are what they pursue.

而西方哲学认为，“有”是仅此的，可以由此“有”到彼“有”，形成逻辑推理思维。

On the contrary the Western philosophy believe the superiority of “being”, and one being can be derived from the other, hence logical deduction by reasoning is what made of the Western thinking mode.

思维方式的不同产生不同的医学。

Medical diversity was brought about through contrasting thinking modes.

这里，中医学从整体归纳思维出发，基于“功能系统”和整体观，形成了中药学、经络学和诊断学。

In Chinese medicine, as a result of the integral induction thinking mode, science of traditional Chinese pharmacology, meridian system and Chinese diagnostics took shape under the influence of “functional system” notion and view on integrity.

西医学基于逻辑推理思维，在实验研究的基础上，发展出了针对具体疾病的药理学和治疗学。

While in Western medicine where logical reasoning thinking frame prevails, pharmacology and therapeutics for specific disease was developed based on methods of experimental research.

中医把病人看做一个整体，综合施治，标本兼治;西医借助科学诊断技术，对症下药，精准快速。

In clinical treatment, Chinese therapists treat the patient in and overall and comprehensive way, dealing with both manifestation and root cause of disease. With the help of scientific diagnostic methods, Western doctors can suit the remedy to the case quickly and precisely.

两种医学各有所长，您能有效区分它们的高下吗?相反，如果把二者结合起来，却相得益彰，那岂不是可以给人类带来更多的福音吗?

While both parties take advantage in one way or another, it is hard to determine the absolute superiority between them. But if we make a combination of the two we will receive a complementary effect and thus benefit our human kind.

所以，让我们多一些交流，少一些区隔;多一些包容，少一些排斥吧!

In conclusion, I would like to propose we all have more communication and exchange over isolation, and more tolerance instead of exclusion!
